You’re here because you care about your privacy — especially the stories, characters, and worlds you pour yourself into. As creators and players of interactive fiction ourselves, we feel the same way. Black Water Lab, Inc. ("Black Water," "we," "us") makes web-based tools for creating and playing interactive narrative games, and this Policy explains what information we handle and how.
Our Commitment
Your privacy isn’t a box we tick — it’s part of building a place that feels safe to create in. We collect only what we need to run and improve Black Water, we work to keep it secure, and we don’t sell your personal information. Everything is stored and processed on servers in the United States.
What We Collect
When you use Black Water, we collect:
- The information you give us when you sign up and use your account — such as your email, login details, and the information needed to confirm you meet our age requirement.
- The content you create — the settings, characters, story structures, and copy you build with our tools.
- Gameplay activity — the messages players send to in-game characters.
- Payment details — handled by our payment providers; we don’t store full card numbers.
- Basic usage information — log, device, and browser data, and cookies and similar local storage that help us keep things working and understand how the Platform is used. In the EEA and UK we ask before setting anything that isn’t strictly necessary.
How We Use It
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and personalize the Platform — giving you access to your account, saving your work, and showing your creations back to you.
- Keep the Platform running and secure — resolving issues, preventing fraud and abuse, and confirming you meet our age requirement.
- Improve our tools and features. Some parts of the Platform use AI to generate content; anything the AI produces is fiction, for entertainment, and can sometimes be wrong. Your creations may help us make our creative tools better — and you can turn this off anytime by emailing us at feedback@blackwaterlabs.io.
- Process payments and communicate with you.
- Meet our legal responsibilities.
Third-Party Services
We rely on trusted third-party service providers to help us run, secure, and improve the Platform — for example, cloud hosting, AI providers, and payment processors — who handle information for us under contract. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your creations with outside parties for their own use.
Where Your Information Is Stored
Your information is stored and processed on secure servers in the United States. When information is transferred across borders, we use appropriate safeguards to protect it in line with applicable law.
Security
Protecting your work matters to us, and we use a range of measures to keep your information safe:
- Encryption of your data both in transit and at rest.
- Storage on secure servers located in the United States.
- Role-based access controls, multi-factor authentication, and access logging on our internal systems.
No method of storing or transmitting information over the internet is ever 100% secure, so while we work hard to protect your information, we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention and Deletion
To delete your account, email us at feedback@blackwaterlabs.io from your account address. We’ll confirm and remove your account information — your login details, contact details, and payment associations. Games you have published stay on the Platform so that players who have them saved can keep playing; you can ask us to take any of them down, or to remove your creator name from them, at any time. A backup copy of deleted data may persist for up to 30 days for disaster recovery, after which it is permanently deleted.
Your Rights
You have the right to access your information, correct anything inaccurate, and delete your account and its data. You can also ask us to stop using your creations to improve our tools. To make any of these requests, email us at feedback@blackwaterlabs.io.
Age Requirement
Black Water is for people aged 16 and older. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16, and if we learn that we have, we’ll delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make a significant change, we’ll give reasonable notice — for example, by posting the updated version here with a new date.
